A sober woman in Chicago’s suburbs, Carrie’s vision to create more meaningful connections and opportunities to socialize without alcohol have materialized. She is passionate about normalizing sobriety through community-building and actively fostering inclusive and diverse sober spaces.

Carrie N. May

Founder, Chicago AF & Brave, LLC

As the host of Brave’s sober off-grid adventures, Carrie thrives on creating unique experiences that encourage connection, reflection, and joy in sobriety. Her love for adventure and creativity extends into building a vibrant, alcohol-free community, one that continues to grow and evolve.

Through Chicago AF, Carrie has successfully partnered with major Chicago area institutions like the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Morton Arboretum to drive the alcohol-free movement. Collaborations like these are critical in raising awareness, gaining traction, and expanding opportunities for sober folks to engage in community-centered experiences.

Carrie continues to champion the alcohol-free movement by recovering out loud and mentoring others. She holds a certification through the International Association of Professional Recovery Coaches, with a specialty in She Recovers Coaching. Outside of her advocacy work, Carrie is a dedicated emergency room nurse practitioner and lives in Arlington Heights with her husband and children.

To give you a glimpse into Carrie’s vision and personality, we asked her about a few of her favorite things:

If Chicago AF had a signature drink (alcohol-free, of course!), what would it be called?

The Chi Topo! I love the elevated simplicity of the Topo Chico bottle with a squeeze of lime. Perfect for every occasion, casual to sophisticated.

What’s the one spot in Chicago you’d recommend for a perfect sober night out?

Andros Taverna  - I had one of my favorite sober nights here during a Chicago AF dinner. Great food and atmosphere, plus a zero proof menu!

If you had to describe Chicago AF in three words, what would they be?

Fun, diverse, friendly.

What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned since starting Chicago AF?

For me, it’s been the overwhelming response from Chicagoans seeking out social activities focused on something other than alcohol.

Who would be your dream guest speaker or partner for an upcoming Chicago AF event?

Chris Marshall of Sans Bar in Austin - I am a total fan girl!
